FIRST MEMORY.

Brian Sankey & Peter Hickman (Right)

My first memory was "shit, what have I got myself into".
Arriving at Leeuwin and sitting in the "scran" hall sipping hot chocolate and then being told by a bloke who said he was a "TOP SHIT", that the hot chocolate was laced with laxatives and then laying awake all night waiting to shit myself stupid, yeah, that was my first memory..

Little things like, lining up to use the phone only to be informed that it was 11pm at your home.

Getting in line for scran and being jacked up the line by some bloke who calls himself a top shit.

It was another world.

"SCRAN"

Getting to the scran hall at lunch time was unbelievable. You would all be in your division etc and then were supposed to march… well, fair-dinkum. You started out marching and at the end you were exhausted from marching at 25mph.

PRIVILEGES

The Sobroan (no idea how to spell it) was a great club and I was fortunate enough to be on the roster to lock up etc. Privileges like being able to go to the front of the scran line and wear sandshoes...
Big thing for us back then! lol

WEEKENDS

Being sort of fostered out for weekends etc was interesting. My first time that I went out to meet the family, they had a yacht at the ROYAL PERTH YACHT CLUB and asked me to come along with them on an outing.

Crikey, I had only seen a picture of a yacht, never been on one and when it started leaning over I thought: SHIT! I have only been in the navy for a couple of months and now I am going to drown. Frightened the crap out of me.

OVERALL...

Overall, Leeuwin was great and the friendships that were forged then are still as strong as ever. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?
